Has your screen time increased throughout winter?

Let’s spring into action, embrace the changing season and use the longer, warmer days as an opportunity to shake up some less-healthy habits that might have crept in over winter. Specifically, we’re talking screen time; adults and kids alike, we all spend more time on our devices when the days are short and it’s cold outside. Our devices have their place and can help make our busy schedules easier to manage, but everything in moderation, right... right?! Studies into the effects of increased screen time have shown there are serious consequences for growing brains in particular. Regardless of how “educational” the content is, time spent interacting with screens and technology can hinder language and learning and reduce children’s ability to concentrate, empathise with others and regulate their emotions. Not to mention the damaging effects on your spine and nervous system from the damaging posture that goes hand in hand with screen time. Next time you’re at Flourish ask your friendly chiropractor for some advice on the best ways to keep your spine strong and resilient and if you need some specific workplace or teenager specific tips!

Here are some suggestions to help reduce screen time for everyone in the household; because parents /adults, this is an opportunity to lead by example and show the kids in our lives that if a habit is affecting our health, we have the power to change it:

- In ‘Settings’, set time limits on devices and whichever applications are the most time consuming or addictive (we’re looking at you Instagram).

- Make agreements as a family about the amount and type of screen time you feel is reasonable and everyone can commit to stick to.

- Encourage regular breaks.

- Turn off the wifi in the evening, grab a board game or go for a walk instead.

- Choose fun alternative activities for kids that get them outside and active.

- Have a fire-pit in the backyard, toast some marshmallows and bathe in some infrared light instead of the blue light of a screen.

- Reclaim the dinner table and encourage conversation and sharing positive moments from everyone’s day.

Good luck and high five for taking this positive step for your family’s health and happiness!
